Speculator Village is on scenic Lake Pleasant, surrounded by mountains, and is home to great ice fishing and snowmobiling on hundreds of miles of trails, as well as xc skiing and skating. It is at 1800' above sea level,. It is the only real village in Hamilton County. It has a variety of business like restaurants, inns, a ski area as well as a supermarket and department store too. It is on the junctions of Route 8 & 30, so there is good access to it from 3 directions.
Lake Pleasant Lake is fed by the Center Branch of the Sacandaga River. The lake is three miles long and two miles wide at a level of 1724 feet above sea level. The state stocks fish in it each spring. There is also Lake Lewey in the northern part of the village along Route 30. Lewey Lake is just south of Indian Lake. Speculator is a great winter town. It has a ski area, Oak Mountain, as well as village and town maintained snowmobile and cross country ski areas. It also has a huge tract of wilderness land to the east past the ski area that loops back to old Route 8, with miles of roads, trails, and 1000s of acres of wooded state land.
